Angela Malchionno: WorkPlay
March 26- April 23
Reception: 3rd Friday, April 17, 5-7 p.m.
Angela Malchionno is a multidisciplinary artist, working in but not limited to, painting, sculpture, print media, and drawing. Her work can be, at times bright and optimistic, while at other times can focus on dark psychological states, such as failure, embarrassment, and doubt. Malchionno favors emotional intelligence over a logical one, using repetition and pattern to represent the infinite, while cutting and reassembling truncate.
Pure land is a term associated with several sects of Buddhism. It is loosely defined as an abstract, heavenly place where one can achieve nirvana easily. The show’s title, WorkPlay, conflates finding pure land with duality: equal parts labor and joy, new territory is mapped using uncertainty as a guide. The resulting works rely on the tension between predetermined acts and unplanned maneuvers: free associations between creative imagination and experiential reality.
