Umwelt: The First and Nearest World is a student exhibition curated by SU Senior, Christy Cox at our Downtown Campus Gallery located at 212 W. Main Street in the Gallery Building. Gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 2-7pm, one until 8pm on Third Fridays of the month.
Artists in Umwelt respond to their nearest world and how it determines their living. Umwelt reflects on the millennial society of mass consumer waste, overconsumption of technology, manipulated nature, and instantaneous satisfaction. Objects within the work become the subject to carry each artist’s message. The umwelt is specific to the individual and viewers will determine on their own the significance work based on their experiences.
If the eye were not sunlike,
It could never gaze upon the sun.
