Cat Mazza

Cat Mazza (b. 1977 Washington DC) is a visual artist whose work combines craft with digital media to explore the overlaps between textiles, technology and labor. Her work investigates the dawn of sweatshops in early industrial capitalism to inform the current crisis of global expansion and the feminization of labor. Her projects such as the Nike Blanket Petition, logoknits, and Stitch for Senate will be on view as part of The Way We Worked. Mazza has received fellowships and grants from Creative Capital, the Rockefeller Foundation and MacDowell Colony. Her animation Knit for Defense is in the Film and Media Arts collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.Past work has shown at the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Museum of Arts and Design (New York City), Triennale di Milano (Italy), Garanti Gallery (Istanbul), the Jönköpings läns Museum (Sweden) and the Milwaukee Art Museum. She has also exhibited at new media festivals The Influencers (Barcelona); Futuresonic (Manchester), FILE (São Paulo) and Ars Electronica (Linz). She has presented her work in artist lectures at numerous venues including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard University and California College of the Arts.Mazza was an early staff member of the New York City art and technology center Eyebeam from 1999-2002. She received her MFA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2005), a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University (1999) and is Associate Professor of Art at UMass, Boston (2007-present).
