Philip McMartin
Working on the WaterSeptember 15 – November 3, 2017SU Art Galleries | Downtown
McMartin, the late father of local furniture maker Jim McMartin, of McMartin and Beggins Furniture Makers in Wittman, MD, created 19 distinct woodcut blocks from the late 1960s into the 1970s depicting the watermen, skipjacks and workboats that were common on the Eastern Shore in the 1960s. Local Master Printer Kevin Garber has collaborated with the younger McMartin, and has hand-printed the entire series in his Bozman studio. The black and white woodcuts depict a vanishing way of life. From Annapolis City Dock scenes to oyster tongers, fish seiners and sailing craft, McMartin’s images are graphic, stylized and artfully reflect the story of labor the Eastern Shore as told by the Nabb Center in The Way We Worked.
