Blanca Montalvo: Queens

Queens is an amusing and irreverent project in which Blanca Montalvo portrays strong and independent women who enjoy their favorite drink. They do it without hiding or censoring themselves, both in public and private settings, alone or in the company of their friends or relatives, and always accompanied by their favorite drink. The story begins with a photograph. The artist represents her Queens from an image, either taken by her or received by the chosen ones. In any case, this approval means that the represented companies are part, in different phases, of the evolution of their playing card. From the initial photograph, they are drawn on pages of different notebooks and represented in watercolors that, although they work independently, are part of the process of creating an object: the deck. The deck has fifty-two cards, divided into four suits -wine, beer, cocktail or spirits-, plus two cards with the explanation of the project in Spanish and English. They all share the same image on the back while, on the front, the colors of the words "Reinas/Queens" help to define the suit, as well as the text of each Queen that identifies it. What seems like a funny game of cards in which the artist portrays her close women, smiling and looking at the camera with their drinks, opens up ways to reflect on the representation of women at different times or the traveling narratives that, with this Exhibition, they travel across the ocean.
Queens es un proyecto divertido e irreverente en el que la Blanca Montalvo retrata a mujeres fuertes e independientes que disfrutan de su bebida favorita. Lo hacen sin ocultarse ni censurarse, tanto en ámbitos públicos como privados, en soledad o en compañía de sus amigos o familiares, y acompañadas siempre de su bebida favorita. La historia comienza con una fotografía. La artista representa a sus Reinas a partir de una imagen, ya sea tomada por ella o recibida por parte de las elegidas. En cualquier caso, esta aprobación hace que las representadas formen parte, en diferentes fases, de la evolución de su naipe. De la fotografía inicial, pasan ser dibujadas en páginas de distintas libretas y representadas en acuarelas que, aunque funcionan independientes, forman parte del proceso de creación de un objeto: la baraja. La baraja cuenta con cincuenta y dos cartas, repartidas en cuatro palos -vino, cerveza, cóctel o espirituoso-, más dos cartas con la explicación del proyecto en castellano e inglés. Todas comparten la misma imagen en el reverso mientras que, por delante, los colores de las palabras “Reinas/Queens” ayudan a definir el palo, además del texto de cada reina que la identifica. Lo que parece un divertido juego de naipes en el que la artista retrata a sus mujeres cercanas, sonrientes y mirando a cámara con su bebida, abre caminos de reflexión sobre la representación de la mujer en diferentes momentos o las narrativas viajeras que, con esta exposición, viajan a través del océano.
